Egons Spuris

Photographer and teacher

Egons Spuris (1931–1990) was a central figure in modern Latvian photography. His series on Riga’s working-class districts is included in the Latvian Culture Canon, which describes his crucial influence on Latvian and Baltic art photography.

Spuris led the Ogre photo studio from 1975 until his death. Inta Ruka joined the studio in the 1980s; he became her teacher and mentor, and later her husband. Their practices remained distinct, but their shared attention to ordinary environments and to photography as a serious artistic form belongs to the history of both artists.

In 2003 the Latvian National Museum of Art presented their work together, accompanied by Inta Ruka, Egons Spuris: Fotogrāfijas / Photographies.
